After a series of teaser posters, Swifties were basically clawing at their keyboards for the “Bad Blood” video to drop. Now that it has, I’m happy to say that Taylor Swift has reached a new level of badassery that will have even the naysayers rooting for her.

How many cameos can you fit into one music video? Sounds like the beginning of a bad joke. However, not only has Joseph Kahn (Music-video director extraordinaire – think – Britney’s “Stronger”/”Toxic” days – and Taylor’s music video for “Blank Space”) pulled out another beautifully executed music video, but he has also taken another sweet, blonde, girl-next-door and turned her into a vixen to be reckoned with. (Red wig and all!)
The “Bad Blood” video is (what I’ve decided to coin) a BAM-BAM-GLAM piece. Lots of action, a surprising collaboration with Kendrick Lamar, and a massive punch of attractively domineering women. With visual elements reminiscent of Sin City, Sucker Punch and other films of that likeness – “Bad Blood” is a real treat for the eyes. Beautiful graphics, amazing wardrobe, and most importantly, the undeniable essence of “girl power”.
Our characters are introduced in (what seemed to be) an agency or school for women of general badassery, and while it was very noble of her to cast her besties as the villains (Gomez and Kloss), we would not have objected to a tongue-in-cheek introduction of some real-life bad blood (ahem – Katy Perry) It would have been an exciting and mature twist to the tale.
I also think that the video’s plot line could have been much more fleshed out, with a smaller, more developed cast. However, I did love the build-up that arose from such an exciting all-star cast, and I was pleasantly surprised to see a music video polished to the same level as Britney’s “Toxic”. (One of the best pop videos ever, in my book.)
I think with Kahn’s return to his pop-icon roots, we may be in for a few more winners. Check out Taylor and her mean-fighting-machine army below:
