Album Review: The Plastics – ‘In Threes’

IMG_8811

Everytime I hear the name ,The Plastics, my mind automatically recalls the Lindsay Lohan film, Mean Girls. Needless to say, even though the band aren’t plastic, pubescent females, they sure live up to the name because they are so “fetch.” See what I did there? 😉

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

From the first listen, The Plastics latest studio album, In Three’s, is flawless. It’s a glorious pastiche of all the indie bands that have influenced the band both lyrically and sonically over the years. You’ll find yourself singing to most tracks, dancing to most tracks, brushing your teeth to most tracks and well.. just loving most tracks. But don’t be fooled by the melodies, as the lyrics showcase a deeper, imaginative side to the band that’s often overlooked.

TOP TRACKS

Alona

‘Alona’ is a beautiful introduction to the album. With shimmering overtones that complement singer Pascal Righini’s dreamy vocals, the title alludes to either a person’s name (Alona) or actually being a loner (I guess the listener’s state of mind would imbue the relevant interpretation)

None Of The Others

‘None of the others’ is another track that I love. With thematic underpinnings of unrequited love, there’s a certain charm and recklessness evoked by lyrics, “Spinning spiral dream is what we had before/No one can believe it when they wreck it all.”This is no doubt one of my favourite songs on the album.

All I Really Want

All I Really Want, masks carnal desires with a playful melody that will sink into your subconscious and have you hit the repeat button till it ceases to function. Not kidding. The band recently released a teaser for the single. You can watch it below, but please watch at your own discretion. It’s quite flashy and might affect those with photosensitive epilepsy.

LYRICS TO LIVE BY

“Vibrations feel sticky, pulling us closer closer together,
To a point where we’re clutching on
Teasing out a piece of Heaven” – All I Really Want

SOUNDS LIKE

The Plastics had a lovechild with Tame Impala in a psychedelic jumping castle with unicorns and candy-floss.
